Chelsea
VS
Manchester City
Graham Potter’s departure from Chelsea came as a surprise on Sunday night, not because of the club’s history or performance on the field, but because of the timing. Todd Boehly’s decision was apparently made following a meeting with Potter on Sunday morning, after surviving the aftermath of a 2-0 home defeat to Aston Villa. If the shambolic performance on Saturday evening wasn’t enough to drive them to make a choice, it’s difficult to imagine how badly that meeting went.
While it’s ironic that Potter’s magic was broken by a team from just nine miles away, the move doesn’t exactly provide certainty. Chelsea’s remaining ten Premier League games will be played without a manager, with Potter’s old assistant Bruno in control.
It’s difficult to predict how the team will perform under a coach who was instrumental in Potter’s Brighton reign, but the managerial move should at the very least put players back in their natural roles. After that, with little left to play for in the league and a lengthy recruitment process ahead, the future at Stamford Bridge is once again unknown.
